[Movie Review]

<I, Daniel Blake>

Valentine Day in Korea: "Valentine Day", "White Day" and "Pepero Day"

Hearts, Background, Red, Pink, White

Feb. 14th is a Valentine day internationally.
To talk about Korean Valentine Day, there's one difference between international and Korean Valentine Day. There's two Valentine Day: one day for women giving a chocolate to men, and the other for men to women. Having two Valentine Days is actually originated from Japan. The "Markets" were so eager to set another new holiday to make a profit out if it, and it also started in Korea, China, and Vietnam.

The day women gives to men is called, "Valentine Day", same as international. The other we call "White Day". On Valentine Day, women give homemade or store-bought chocolates to men; men return their appreciation to women on White Day with hard candies on 14th of next month (March 14th).

In Korea, there are at least one celebrating holiday a month. Most of 14th day of the month is celebrated but listed are the ones Koreans care.

1. JJa-Jang-Myeon Day (April 14th)
April 14th is the day for those who haven't received or given anything on Valentine and White day by eating JJa-Jang-Myeon (짜장면, Chinese Noodles).

2. Rose Day (May 14th)
Lovers express their love by sharing flower roses.
Roses, Bouquet Of Roses, Bouquet, Flowers, White, Pink

3. Pepero Day (Nov. 11th)
Kinda similar with Valentine Day. We share Pepero sticks with friends and lovers. Nov. 11th is 11/11 which's similar with Pepero sticks.

If you miss California in Korea, CALI IN THE BOWL (Californian restaurant) in Hong-Dae

I'd like to introduce you a restaurant which reminds me of my CA life in Hong-Dae in Seoul, Korea.
The name is CALI IN THE BOWL(캘리인더볼). Just like the name, whenever I visit there to remember my High school life, I could feel my CA life in the bowl just like I had in High school.

'Teriyaki chicken bowl with rice' I LOVED it!!! and I still love it.
And there are more menus which "smells" Californian Mexcian food such as 'Burrito Bowl'. The price is affordable and it has tasty foods and generous servings with fresh vegies.

K-Culture: Dong-Ji/ Winter Solstice (동지)

Have you heard about 'Dong Ji' in Korea?

In Korea and China, an year includes 24 cycles depending on Sun's movement. The 22nd of the 24 is celebrated due to the shortest time of daylight and the longest night of the year. In Korea, we call Dong Ji, Winter Solstice, 동지. Usually it's December 20-23.

From older times, Koreans believed that eating porridge made by red bean will defeat evil spirits because the color of red bean, red, will beat the spirits. Since then, Koreans celebrate Dong Ji eating the porridge, Pat-Juk, 팥죽.

This year Dong Ji was Dec. 21st, and my mom made me Pat-Juk!
Hope every bad luck will go away! :)

‘NICK KNIGHT: IMAGE’ exhibition in Seoul, Korea

Today I went out to Daelim Museum because I haven’t visited any art exhibition recently. In Seoul, if you suddenly want to see some artworks lightly, you could visit Daelim Museum. The museum is easily reachable. I don’t only mean the physical distance from the city. Anyone can come to Museum and grasp an exhibition easily. The museum doesn’t make you feel isolated and doesn’t provide too much. It’s the place where people casually visit with cheap price ticket (KRW5,000/ 5dollars).

* Who is Nick Knight?
From Daelim Museum website
Born in London in 1958, Nick Knight has drawn world’s most acclaim as a photographer for his bold, experimental techniques. Knight spent his youth in Paris with father, a psychologist. In the late 1970s, he returned to the British capital and entered the University of London to study medicine and human biology. The following year, however, in search of his true calling, Knight began studying photography at Bournemouth & Poole College of Art and Design. From the mid-1980s, he began collaborating with pioneers at the cutting edge of creativity, such as Alexander McQueen, Björk, Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Vogue and i-D. His works have been displayed at numerous institutions worldwide, including the Tate Modern, V&A and Saatchi Gallery in London and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Meanwhile, SHOWstudio, the website Knight established in 2000, has proved an ongoing sensation in the fashion world, sharing artists' inspiration, processes and creative spaces in real time through a variety of experimental content.

* His First exhibition in Seoul, Korea
From Daelim Museum website
NICK KNIGHT: IMAGE’ provides a comprehensive overview of the oeuvre of an artist who has repeatedly reinvented himself through images ranging from documentary photos to fashion campaigns carrying social messages for ethnic and animal conservation, and works incorporating digital technology. This exhibition presents some 100 key photos, videos and installations by Nick Knight, highlighting his artistic, avant-garde experimentation that constantly overturns conventional notions of values and beauty. Knight's images, produced through bold demolition of existing forms, bring new visual stimulation to viewers, providing not fear of the unfamiliar but a sense of excitement. Powerfully conveying the artist's way of viewing and interpreting the world, and the messages he aims to deliver, these images give us the courage to constantly adopt novel, individual perspectives.

Travel

My father had taken our family to attractions for vacation regularly. In Korea, mostly East Sea or West Sea, and when my family lived in the states, we drove to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and so on.
*
Taiwan was the first country that I traveled alone. Normally, I enjoy spending time alone and value my own time so it was not a surprise that the Taiwan trip just unlashed my desire to travel abroad more often to "release" my stress from work.
*
To start this blog actually began because I enjoyed traveling and took a lot of pictures I think but not remained. I'd like to gather and post throw back photos and thank how much I've captured beautiful scenes and lighten my working spirit back!
